HELP US REACH OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL!

To bring love and light through the delivery of free professional photography services — preserving the memories of infants who have passed away.

our mission

this little l  ght of mine

Our mission is to empower and support volunteer photographers with the resources and care they need to serve without barriers and enhance access to both photographers seeking to help and Maine families enduring infant loss.

The value provided in these images is immeasurable. After enduring a full labor and delivery of my baby and leaving the hospital with empty arms, preserving these memories with keepsake photos provides comfort in a way nothing else does.

Our purpose in serving these families is to offer compassionate, professional photography at no cost to honor and preserve their baby's memory with dignity, providing a lasting keepsake that offers comfort during this time of loss.

Offering professional & tasteful images to Maine families experiencing infant loss without the financial burden during their time of need.

In 2023, 65 Maine infants passed away. Maine averages 5.6 infant deaths per 1,000 born. There is only one agency (national) that provides photography services for parents who experience an infant death and only 7 photographers currently work through them statewide. Currently, photographers working for that agency must pay a membership fee to contribute to this cause. Barriers exist that prevent photographers from participating in this "free" service to Maine parents. This Little Light of Mine would seek to reduce/eliminate these barriers so that photographers would be able to provide families with these important lasting memories without the encumbrance of financial burden.

"Having these images made it easier to leave the hospital with empty arms."

"When enduring this type of trauma, it's difficult to know how to navigate it in a way that both honors and preserves the memory of your baby. As difficult as it was to endure the loss of our Emmett, and knowing we would likely forget many details due to the traumatic nature of infant loss, having these images to look back on when I was ready made it somewhat easier to let go and leave the hospital. You're never ready to fully let go, and knowing that you'll have these precious keepsakes to look back on provides comfort and support in a way nothing else does."

"When I lost my son Malcolm, I initially said no to professional photography- it felt wrong in such an unthinkable moment. But the few images I later received became some of my most treasured possessions. They're a lasting reminder of one of my greatest loves and greatest losses, and I'm endlessly grateful I have them."

"Those photographs have become some of my most treasured possessions."

"There are so many impossible questions you're asked in such a short period of time when you lost an infant - especially when the loss follows a pregnancy complication that triggers and urgent delivery. Do you want to deliver naturally? Would you like your baby to be baptized? Which funeral home will you use? Do you want to hold your baby? Would you like professional photographs taken? It's overwhelming to face those questions while in shock from trauma and grief. When the nurse asked if we wanted professional photography, my ex-husband and I said no. We had just learned that our baby had died, and the idea of taking pictures felt wrong - especially when a joyful newborn shoot was what we had been preparing for. But truly, nothing about that moment was right. Later, after the nurses kindly shared a few candid photos they had taken for us, we realized we had made a mistake. We were fortunate to have a photographer travel to the funeral home the day after our son passed to take pictures, and I am so grateful we did. Those few images mean more to me than I could have ever imagined. Those photographs have become some of my most treasured possessions. The gift they continue to give me - a tangible reminder of one of my greatest loves and greatest losses - is immeasurable. It is a blessing to have these images of my son Malcolm, both for myself and to share with others, and I am endlessly thankful that I have them. If you're reading this and questioning the same things I once did, my answer is this: take the photos. There will already be so many regrets tied to the loss of your baby - please don't let missing your chance to capture images of them be one of them."
